Telling Tana’s METRIN Story: 13 Questions

Here at METRIN Skincare, we’re proud to celebrate our 85th birthday in 2017 – and what an incredible eight and a half decades it’s been so far!

Something that we at METRIN place a lot of value on is commitment. We’re committed to nurturing the health of your skin, providing an amazing product and service – and to our customers, distributors and associates.

In turn, we couldn’t be where we are today without the committed support of our many inspirational long-term customers and distributors… So what better time to share the stories of one of our long-time devotees – Tana Hanke.

Meet Tana: METRIN User for over 50 Years

Based in Edmonton (Alberta), Tana has been a METRIN distributor for many years. Her association with our brand followed in the footsteps of her mother, Ruth Small – a passionate distributor and lover of METRIN herself for over 50 years until her passing in 2013 at the age of 90. Together, Tana and Ruth share a rich and lasting history with METRIN, and we celebrate that!

So join us in learning a little more about Tana – her day-to-day life, what makes her tick, and her connection with METRIN…

1. Tell us about yourself! What makes you, you?

I have been married for 26 years to my wonderful supportive husband, and we have 2 children.  Other than working my METRIN business, I work 3 days a week as a bookkeeper.  I have a large extended family and love family gatherings and holidays.  Any chance we have to travel, we go!  I have been a huge CFL fan especially of my beloved Edmonton Eskimos and have been to more than 16 Grey Cups since 1980 (I have lost count). I also enjoy hockey – Go Oilers!!

2. How long have you used METRIN Skincare for? At what age did you start?

I started using METRIN in 1962 (age 4). I don’t remember using it personally every day at that age, but I do remember my Mom washing my face with METRIN at a very young age.  I don’t ever remember soap in our house. Then again, at age 4, skin care wasn’t very important to me!

3. What is it about METRIN that has made you use it for so many years?

The short answer – my Mom!  Like most teenagers, I thought I knew better and would go off the program and try things my friends were using or the TV said we should. I can still hear my Mom saying “that will only plug up your pores”, but she let me find out on my own.  I remember a day in Grade 8 telling my Mom I couldn’t go to school because I had 2 small pimples on my forehead, something I had never had, even though many of my friends suffered terribly from acne – she made me go anyway. So I guess it works!!

4. How did you come across METRIN?

My Mom saw an ad and Marlene Nash – a  METRIN representative at the time – came to the house to show her the product. That was in 1962, and my Mom started selling the product in 1963.  They were great friends until Mom died in 2013.

5. What is the one life mantra that you always live by?

To be happy and content with what you have.

6. Which step from our 5-Step Skincare System do you like the most, and how do you find it beneficial to your skin?

I like them all! But if I had to pick one, it would probably be the Protective Lotion. It is very refreshing and has so many uses.

7. In what way has the METRIN Skincare System altered your skin?

That’s a tough one.  Because I have used it for so many years, I don’t really know anything else.  In my teen years, if I did have a break out, it would clear up very quickly.

8. What is the most proud moment you’ve experienced in your life so far?

Becoming a mother and watching my children grow.

9. What is your favourite METRIN moment/experience?

I have had many comments over the years about my skin and am often told I look younger than I am.

10. What is your favorite METRIN moment about your Mom?

My Mom – Ruth Small – was a walking METRIN commercial.  She was a very proper and classy lady who looked younger than her years.  She became widow with 4 teenagers in 1975 when our father died suddenly.

Shortly after that, Macil Sumpter – METRIN’s former President – asked her to take over the Edmonton area. At first my Mom said no, but with some encouraging from Macil, she relented and took it on.  As with everything she did, she dove in and the business grew. She opened the first METRIN Centre in the 80’s; I couldn’t have been prouder of her and her accomplishments.

11. Do you have any “out-of-the-box” ways you use your METRIN products?

There are many different ways I have used METRIN. As toothpaste or to gargle with. Before there were hair products in the product line, we sometimes used the Lathering Cleanser as shampoo and the Deep Cleanser a conditioner. Protective Lotion in the bath water, especially during our cold, dry winters really makes a difference too.

12. What do you love to do to relax?

I relax sitting in the sunshine reading or just sitting in quiet meditation.  I also like scrapbooking and making cards.

13. What is your biggest dream in life?

I don’t know if I would call it a dream, maybe a goal: I hope to have my health so I can travel into my old age.
